Orca Mom Finally Lets Go Of Her Dead Baby After Carrying It For 17 Days

posted by Brooke Morrison -

An Orca mom swam more than 1,000 miles for 17 days with her dead calf on her nose, mourning her loss quite publicly. Known as J35, or Tahlequah, the Center for Whale Research says that she's finally dropped the body back into the water.

They've reported that Tahlequah is in good health and seems to be in good spirits. "Her tour of grief is now over and her behavior is remarkably frisky," the Center for Whale Research said.

The calf died shortly after it was born on July 24th. Orcas have been known to carry dead babies like this for up to a week.

It's also reported that now 100% of these whale pregnancies result in failure due to lack of sufficient food for their mothers. 3 years ago it was only 75%.
